Alien Invasion: Innovative game-based school diagnostic system

DESCRIPTION

Can you imagine a video game that would help young school dropouts get back to school? Well, that is what Alien Invasion is all about. It is a diagnostic tool based on game-based learning, that provide an alternative to traditional diagnostic tests used assess the schooling level of boys and girls who have been out of the school system but who are looking to resume their educational experience.

Up to four players at a time can take part in Alien Invasion where each student is encouraged to become more independent while working together. The game is based on the contents of the first intermediate level proposed by Fundación Súmate for young adults and adult education, including evaluation indicators for socioemotional skills, that Súmate wishes to share with anyone joining its community.

This solution was developed within the framework of UC EduLab’s Education 2020 Challenges program, by a transdisciplinary team led by Patricia Guerrero, an faculty member from the School of Education, along with a team of PhD students in Education and Sociology, The Súmate Foundation, Mapu Praxis (an organization comprised of teachers dedicated to creating learning spaces), and Within Play, a board game developer.
